Portugal has ordered the Worldcoin cryptocurrency project to “stop collecting people’s biometric data.”
The project, requiring users to scan their eye retinas for “proof of identity,” ran into another obstacle in a country.
According to the news provided by Reuters, a data regulator in Portugal, CNPD, ordered Worldcoin to stop collecting personal data for 90 days.
Worldcoin, which has been at the center of personal data privacy debates since day one, had been already suspended in Spain, India, France, and Brazil.
The CNPD, in its statement, mentioned that more than 300,000 people in Portugal had provided data to Worldcoin:
“The project’s operation poses a high risk to the citizens’ data protection rights, justifying urgent intervention to prevent serious harm. More than 300,000 people in Portugal have provided Worldcoin with their biometric data.”
Worldcoin was distributing WLD tokens as an airdrop in exchange for retina scans.
